A learning experience is one of those things that says, ‘You know that thing you just did? Don’t do that.’
~Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt

Something About Something

Did you know you can get the first three novels in the Transit series all in one place and at half the price? The Transit Omnibus is available now and includes Out of Due Season, Sunshine and Shadow, and All We Leave Behind as one 1426-page book with a full glossary, dramatis personae, and several maps in the back. I bring this up because…

…I am much closer to finishing up the fourth book in the series, which will look at the colonists’ life fifty-five years later. The focus of The Widening Gyre is on betrayal, power struggles, and the fear generated by the unknown.

I should have it ready for beta readers by mid-August. If you’re interested in being one of the first people to read The Widening Gyre, I encourage you to sign up to be an early reader. As a gift, you’re welcome to choose any of my books for free.

If you’re curious about the title, I present the following stanza from William Bulter Yeats “The Second Coming.”

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Author Highlight

I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know many authors over the last several years, and I thought I would start highlighting them in my newsletter. I mean: you like to read, they like to write, and the two of you would make a wonderful couple.

Lou Kemp

I “met” Lou Kemp through…I can’t remember, but what I do know is that for the past few years I have had the pleasure of working with her on several projects as a beta reader. Although originally from California, Lou resides in the Pacific Northwest with family and a herd of cats who like to block her computer screen whenever possible. Before turning to writing full time, she was an engineer and project manager. When not writing, Lou quilts for charity and edits on a pro-bono basis for other authors.

Her early work was horror and suspense, while later work morphed into a combination of magical realism, mystery and adventure painted with a horrific element as needed. Lou is one of those writers who doesn’t plan ahead–no outlines, no clue, and sometimes that means she will write herself into a corner.

I highly recommend Violins Played Before Junstan, a delightfully rich steampunk historical fiction piece that will get you into the Celwyn series. I reviewed this book in 2021 along with the follow-on novel Music Shall Untune The Sky.

Her latest is The Sea of the Vanities, which I read in its infancy. Quite a wonderful story! The first companion book to the Celwyn Series is now available. If you enjoy fantastic storms, pirates, and a touch of romance, this supernatural sea adventure may be what you are looking for. The Sea of the Vanities also answers the question, is death to be feared?

Indie Author Program Selection Review

An End to Etcetera

An End to Etcetera by B. Conklin

B. Robert Conklin unfurls a narrative around a fascinating cast of characters, among them a troubled teenager, Leal, and his therapist, Selena. Their story intricately weaves through an unnerving maze of truth and illusion, their professional relationship serving as a dramatic backdrop for exploring these elusive themes.

Each character brings a layer of intrigue. Selena Harris, despite her personal struggles, exudes a relentless humanity in her quest to help Leal, a character shrouded in mystery and charm. Their interplay creates a sense of unease that pervades the novel, pushing both readers and characters alike to question the authenticity of their depicted reality. The plot spirals towards a climax filled with unexpected twists, turning the narrative into a compelling exploration of motive and truth.

The book, despite its somewhat exaggerated conclusion, leaves a lingering impact. Conklin’s narrative successfully blends suspense with deep psychological insight. An End to Etcetera stands out as a thoughtfully written tale that effortlessly keeps readers on their toes, immersed in a constant state of uncertainty. Its unique character interactions, layered narrative, and the relentless pull of its intriguing plotline ensure a captivating read from beginning to end.

I am a student of both psychology and epistemology, that is the study of the mind and the study of knowledge. Or something like that. When I selected An End to Etcetera as one of my Indie Author Review Program books for 2023, I did not expect to get both in a one beautifully written package.
