The Sketches from the Spanish Mustang

The Sketches from the Spanish Mustang are a collection of novellas featuring characters from Cripple Creek, Colorado, a mining town once vibrant that nearly died.

It was the lovers of history who held on to this town’s life until they couldn’t hold it much longer. The people who wouldn’t let go of their roots refused to give in. They grew families and they talked about the little things that, to them, were big things: riding the tricycles up the streets, getting fudge at the General Store, sneaking into the abandoned block houses and finding treasures galore in the form of old newspapers and rocks and rusty nails.

It was the children of the town who didn’t grow up, the adults who didn’t move away, the wrinkled people who knew what life was like outside of the history books, who grasped the town and wouldn’t let go.

The sketches are their stories.

Originally, the intention was to merge them all into one novel, much like Olive Kitteridge. But there were so many sketches that could be written, I opted to withdraw the novel (which you may still find here and there) and re-release them all individually.

That way, of course, I could write more.

And there are many more coming. If you think about it, in a town of roughly 1,200 people, there are probably somewhere around 1,200 character sketches that could be written. I’m not going to go that far, but I do have freedom.
