Description (from Amazon.com)

Lotus Calanthe can’t believe her luck when she lands a high paying job at a resort in paradise- or so she thinks. At the last minute, the plan changes, sweeping her off to another location and the job description couldn’t be more different or unappealing. A journey underground to an ore mine on a frozen planet awaits her and from the start it becomes apparent there is more to it all than meets the eye. As doubt begins to rise in her mind, it becomes clear someone worked in her coveted position before and everyone seems to know something they won’t tell. Soon, she finds herself reeling from disturbing sensations that make her question her own sanity and commit an unforgivable mistake that sends currents traveling farther than she can imagine. Just what happened to the woman she replaced? Why do the miners arm themselves as if going to war? What are the true intentions of everyone around her- and what deadly, unfathomable secret lurks in the darkness of the mines?

The Review

I have been a fan of caves and mines for the longest time. My first few books were about caves, and later in life, I find myself drawn to more novels about caves. I have been in many as well, always alert to the possibilities that surround me in the dark. So when I was presented with the opportunity to read and review Pearl in the Deep by Katherine L. Parker–set in cave/mine–I jumped.

I was not disappointed. It starts simple enough–Lotus Calanthe gets a new job on a planet which has a cavern system beneath her. It’s not the job she wanted, and she doesn’t feel welcome. From the start, her curiosity draws the reader into the story immediately, and when Lotus is first brought down into the caves–mines–and shown the fuel known as blue pearl, nothing is really as it seems. When two worlds collide–above and below–the action takes off.

Pearl in the Deep does not let up on the story despite its length. Delightfully interspersed throughout the book are poems which both foreshadow and dig deeper into the emotions. Parker does an outstanding job with extensive biological world-building. Learning that she had once intended to write this book as a graphic novel, I would have been interested to see artwork within the pages, and if it was my ability to ever influence writers to do such a thing, I would say–do it.

This novel is at once mystery, fantasy, science fiction, and thriller. The writing is both crisp and poetic, especially within dream sequences. I connected with Lotus from the beginning and enjoyed running around the cave system with her. Pearl in the Deep is a highly recommended novel, and one that deserves much more attention than it has been given to date.

Author Interview

Pearl in the Deep has a unique setting. Where did you get this idea and why do you believe it fits the story so well?

I honestly don’t really know where I got the idea for the setting. I started writing this novel almost 14 years ago, so it started as a cave world building story and then just evolved over the years from there. Maybe because I’ve always loved caves, geology, spelunking, and been fascinated with mines and thought about what could be there given the right circumstances.

I read that you intended to write Pearl in the Deep as a graphic novel, but later turned it into a novel. Have you considered returning to that idea?

Oh yes, many times! I’m still trying to improve my illustration skills to get to that level because there are so many scenes I would like to express visually. It’s coming one day, I hope!

Given that you are also an illustrator, what are your thoughts on novels with illustrations interspersed throughout?

I love them! I wish it was something that was done more, because sometimes as a reader, I want to see the author’s vision of their characters, world, and creatures. It’s actually something I plan to be doing with future novels.

Do you have a writing routine?

I have a loose writing routine…sometimes I have to take a step back for a while, as with artwork, and think about what the writing needs, or in some cases, wants. It sounds weird but sometimes I almost treat my writing as if it’s a painting.

I’m a fan of easter eggs in movies and novels. Did you have any in this one?

I can’t say too much about them, but I have quite a few in Pearl in the Deep that will relate to my future novels!

Did you edit out anything you wish you would have kept in?

Yes, definitely…the novel would have been so much longer if I hadn’t, though. It was mostly toward the end. At some point I finally said, you know what, this just needs to go in the sequel(s).

How has this writing journey been for you?

With Pearl in the Deep it’s been very interesting, and very, very long, but I loved every minute. In general, I love writing and the process so much I don’t think I can be without it.

Can you give us a little update to the sequel for Pearl in the Deep?

Yes! It’s in the works, and I’m about to finish up the first draft and on to the fun part, editing!
