~Ray Bradbury

Hello!

I thought I would get a little more personal in this newsletter. This is Issue 25, after all, so that might mean something.

But hear me out first.

For those who don’t know who I am (and that’s approximately 8.1 billion people), I am a speculative fiction author and writing coach who writes science fiction, dark fantasy, magical realism, and some horror.

You can find more about me on my website, where you’ll also find blog articles related to writing as well as book reviews (and if you’re an author, you can request a review as well). There’s a complete bibliography, too (even though there’s a shorter one down below…with a secret.)

My “official” bio is always available to review, so I won’t get into all that (and if you REALLY want to get into specifics, you can see my professional LinkedIn page (say hi) where I have a much better picture).

So…who am I really and what can I offer?

As some know (and others probably guessed), I’ve written a few things–21 novels, novellas, collections, and two of the weirdest creative writing books ever. I decided to list them in this particular anniversary newsletter with links for you to get at least two of them for free (it’s like a treasure hunt).

That’s right. If you’d read this far, you can get something for nothing.

And as some of you know (and others may have just discovered), if you need a beta reader or someone to talk to about specific areas in your work, you can let me know (click on the links). I have a busy schedule–who doesn’t?–but I love talking to other writers and helping out in this journey we call authorship.

Thank you for reading this newsletter! And please check out some of the links below.

Indie Author Program Selection Review

Revolution

Revolution by David Dorrough

Revolution by David Dorrough offers an intimate look into the lives of middle-aged Angelenos in search of greater meaning. Dorrough’s debut novel centers around married couple Bill and Yvonne Smede and their circle of friends and neighbors. With its lack of plot and microscope on daily life, Revolution evokes the conversational charm of shows like Seinfeld.

I lived north of Los Angeles for a time and was fascinated by the life people led in that “big city just over that mountain range.” I think that may be one of the reasons this book captivated me–I could relate.

Dorrough immediately pulled me into the world of his characters through witty dialogue and vivid everyday details. While the lack of traditional plot may put some readers off, I delighted in seeing the story threads artfully woven together. As Dorrough’s characters chased dreams and grappled with the realities of midlife, I found myself invested in their pursuits.

Though Revolution lends itself to dipping in and out, I powered through, eager to see what cleverly observed human moment Dorrough would unwrap next. He delivers poignant yet humorous looks at the ennui that often accompanies middle age. Fans of character-driven books that find resonance in life’s quieter moments will find much to enjoy in Revolution‘s affectionate satire of mundane urban living.
