A Poem: Bully Trigger

A Poem: Bully Trigger

Bully Trigger was written in early 2021 as a way to deal with a specific problem that has been bothering me since I was in the 5th or 6th grade. I never liked bullies (who does), and for many of us, that reason is personal. We were bullied ourselves or we saw people get bullied sometimes far too often.

This is one of the few poems I have written outside of formal school that had a cadence. I was particular about the number of lines per stanza, the opening image, and the rhythm when spoken aloud. Bully Trigger is a story, from memory to dream to resolution.

Unlike many of the poems I had written in the past, this one ends on a high note. I like to call that “growth.”

Deep in the darkness of dreams a tapping,
A man sinks in sweat under a blanket;
Floods of memory
Disturbed by regrets:
Things unsaid,
A wish not granted,
Fears eclipse;
Words in a chapter
Confused,
Muddled triggers to light the aching fire.

Deep in the darkness of dreams a crossing,
A man now a boy traverses the street
To flee the scarred beast
With the sneer alight;
A black voice,
Harsh words, summer heat:
Burn, bruise, rip
A wound now deeper
Festering,
Transforming the soul of the boy now man.

Deep in the darkness of dreams a wishing,
The boy in the dream afraid to speak out;
He prays for the strength;
Flailing fists conjured,
Blood to spurt
From a toxic mouth
The beast falls
The torment absolved.
Hope says,
“What would you say to the beast with the scars?”

Out of the darkness of dreams a rebirth,
The soul of a boy in a man aroused;
The dirty faces,
Bullies in present:
Beasts with scars,
Still have sneers alight;
But released
This man, no more young
Now strong;
With confidence new from the light of dreams.
