A Semi-Not-Horribly-Regular Newsletter
ISSUE 2. OCTOBER 13, 2021

In this issue: Giveaway, Other NewsNew PostsBook NewsRecent Work, and Recent Reads (a review).

Howdy. I’m Benjamin X. Wretlind and this is the 2nd issue of A Semi-Not-Horribly-Regular Newsletter.

It dawned on me sometime in September that allowing emails to go out for every post was not the best idea. So, from now on, the only emails that will come from me are these newsletters (which summarize all the articles written anyway), new book announcements or very special events, and giveaways.

Speaking of giveaways…

October Giveaway

My first giveaway last month was fun. If you missed it, don’t worry. Here’s the BIG OCTOBER GIVEAWAY.

Right now and through October 15th, you can enter to win three (3) autographed copies of my books plus a custom-made rollerball pen. This is a $101.85 value, and I’ll ship for free.

Click this fancy link for more details and to enter.

There are a few ways you can get multiple entries, and who doesn’t like that. Check it out and see how.

Other News

In other news, I’ve been selected as a contributor for Writing from the Peak, Pikes Peak Writers blog. In fact, my first article was published recently on October 5th. Check it out and let me know what you think!

I’m especially excited about this opportunity. When I first moved to the region, I wanted to join in an influential and extremely helpful writers’ group. Being the introvert I am and falling into a bit of a writing slump, however, inhibited my ability to do anything of the sort. Mind you, it would have been helpful. Not that I’m an extrovert now, but I am more inclined to participate in these types of groups and their related activities (like the upcoming 2022 Pikes Peak Writers Conference).

New Content (stories, articles and more)

  • In the Free Reads section, I currently have two short stories (one added recently called “Terminal Conversations“), some book excerpts and poems
  • New blog articles:
    • Location, Location, Location
      • Location, Location, Location. We’ve heard it before, how important it is to a story. The setting of a story can move about, but it is no less important (I believe) than the characters or the plot. After all, where would the characters act out the plot if not in a setting?
    • Preparing to Write Pike’s Wrong
      • One cold morning, while sucking down copious amounts of coffee and staring off into the vastness of the desert, I was reminded of Zebulon Pike and how mistakes often turn into something else entirely, how mistakes can actually be a good thing.
    • How to: Develop a Writing Routine
      • Naturally, developing a routine in anything–be it writing or exercise or coffee making or reading or needlepoint–is important to us as humans.
    • A 3-part series on Kindle Vella
      • What it Kindle Vella? Is it beneficial to the reader? What about the writer? In this 3-part series I attempt to answer 9 of the most common questions surrounding this new platform offered up by Amazon.

Book News

I will have some exciting book-ish news to share with you on October 21st! Stay tuned to all your regularly scheduled emails and social media accounts!

Elsewhere…

Beneath Gehenna, a Lovecraftian steampunk apocalyptic sci-fi horror novel, is still being serialized on Kindle Vella. As this novel is 100% written and edited, new episodes are released on Sunday and Thursday of each week.

To start reading, go to this website: https://www.amazon.com/kindle-vella/product/B09CZK57GP or click the logo below. Super easy.

I have also joined a Blog Hop to showcase a few other Kindle Vella authors who are great a what they do. I have personally read all of these stories and can say they are, without a doubt, excellent reads. Check out the first “hop” and then take a look at the second “hop”.

I’m still on track to release my collection Regarding Dead Things on the Side of the Road later this year. I don’t have an official release date yet, but that’s coming.

With 15 short stories, some poems and two novellas, this collection should have something for everyone. Covering ground from 1991 until 2021, each story is forwarded by my own short take on why or how it was written. So, if you’re looking for a literary smörgåsbord, this collection is right for you.

Some of these stories have been published in magazines like The Horror ExpressAll HallowsHorror Carousel and the Bare Bones anthology series, while others have never been published before.

More information will be coming out, to include the final release date very soon.

The first novel I published, Castles, is still out there. I got a 5-star review recently that made me think I might have done something right.

This story is well written. When I started I couldn’t put it down until I finished. It’s been awhile since I finished a book that fast. When it comes to stories like this, you realize how limiting language truly is. This would be an excellent book for a psychology or philosophy class. I highly recommend this book.

If you haven’t picked up a copy, try it out. If you have Kindle Unlimited, you can read for free. There’s also the smell-good paper version if you like to hold books in your hand.

And if you enter the giveaway, you might win an autographed copy.

Recent Work

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, I have been writing a sci-fi philosophy novella called Sunset on Maior Pales. The premise is simple, but the story has been giving me fits as I put certain literary rules in place.

I am about halfway through the story and really hope to be much closer to the end of the first draft by November. I was planning to post a snippet, but will hold off until another time.

I have another project I will be attempting for my first ever NaNoWriMo event. That one is outlined, set up and ready to go. More on that later in another newsletter.

Recent Reads

Call Numbers: The Not So Quiet Life of Librarians by Syntell Smith – This book intrigued me with its premise and then stuck with me after I read it. As a library nerd (I practically lived in them when I was very young), I was immediately immersed in the story, following each of the fleshed out characters as they navigated The System. Not being from New York, the descriptions and pacing made me feel like I had been before, something I admire as a hallmark of a good narrative. Bring me in, leave me there, let me wander.

Please let your friends know if they’re interested in blog posts about writing and all the other odd things you might find on this site. They can sign up for my Semi-Not-Horribly-Regular Newsletter at this link: https://www.bxwretlind.com/blog/subscribe

That does it for this issue of the newsletter. I’ll see you back here next time!
