Drivers are quite the opposite. They are the things you <em>should<\/em> do. So how can we relate these to your characters?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s take a look at both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Injunctions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transactional_analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transactional Analysis<\/a>, injunctions are things we learn from our parents or those who raised us. They are usually preceded by the word \u201cDON\u2019T\u201d that applies to some state of our being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Injunctions are the messages your characters received as a child that tell them they\u2019re not okay or they\u2019re not allowed to do or be certain things. Typically, these messages aren\u2019t said outright, but picked up through behavioral cues. Injunctions are a great source of insecurity for a character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t feel. It\u2019s not alright to show your feelings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t belong. Putting down roots is a bad idea; you\u2019re a loner and you don\u2019t belong anywhere<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t be you. Who you are isn\u2019t good enough; you should be _______ (pick one: more academic; straight; like your brother)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t think. If I want your opinion, I\u2019ll ask for it; \u201csmartypants\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t exist. My life was great before I had kids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t be close. Attachment is wrong. People will hurt you (or you will hurt them)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t grow up. It\u2019s a pity children have to turn into teenagers, innit?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t be important. Stop trying to get attention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t be well. If feel good when I\u2019m taking care of you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t make it. Nothing in this family does anything worthwhile; don\u2019t get too big for your britches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t be a child. You need to be the adult and look after me<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are quite a few of them as you can see. Each one of these we may have heard at times growing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And guess what? So did your character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s go to that first injunction up there: <strong>Don\u2019t feel<\/strong>. If our protagonist\u2019s parents were to forbid outward displays of emotion\u2014or through their own behavior show that feelings are not okay\u2014how do you think a person will react as an adult when someone asks them \u201chow are you feeling?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hint: They may not answer, or they may cover their true emotion (e.g., sadness, grief) with something more aggressive (e.g., anger). You might also hear them say &#8220;I&#8217;m fine&#8221; when they clearly aren&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Drivers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversely, there are drivers. These can be preceded by the word \u201cDO.\u201d These messages, unlike injunctions, are typically positive and given intentionally. They tell us things will be okay <strong>if we follow the message and don\u2019t screw it up<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, if those messages are taken in as absolutes, your characters may have problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do Try Hard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do Hurry Up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do Please Others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do Be Perfect<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do Be Strong<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These may sound appealing, and our caregivers probably had our best intentions in mind when they said them to us, but are they really helpful in the present? Can they not limit who we are?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Applying Injunctions &amp; Drivers to Your Character<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internal conflict is important to a story. The tug of war inside a character is what may eventually lead them to grow from the inciting incident to the denouement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about a character you\u2019ve created. Now, give them one driver (e.g., be perfect) and one injunction (e.g., don\u2019t be important). What are they probably going through?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their thoughts may end up \u201cI shouldn\u2019t try to be the center of attention, but it\u2019s okay if I\u2019m perfect\u201d).
