Built in the glory days of Asbury Park by a reclusive millionaire, the magnificent structure\u2014which foreshadowed the beauties of art-deco architecture\u2014is now boarded up and marked for demolition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five people are &#8220;creepers,&#8221; the slang term for urban explorers: city archeologists with a passion for investigating abandoned buildings and their dying secrets. On this evening, they are joined by a reporter who wants to profile them\u2014anonymously, as this is a highly illegal activity\u2014for a New York Times article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frank Balenger isn&#8217;t looking for just a story, however. And after the group enters the rat-infested tunnel leading to the hotel, it becomes clear that he will get much more than he bargained for. Danger, terror, and death await the creepers in a place ravaged by time and redolent of evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The darkest secrets live in places you\u2019re not supposed to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bxwretlind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3-stars.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bxwretlind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3-stars.png\" alt=\"3 stars\" class=\"wp-image-7356\" width=\"256\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bxwretlind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3-stars.png 512w, https:\/\/bxwretlind.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3-stars-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My Thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1984 (I think), I read David Morrell&#8217;s <em>First Blood<\/em>. I was captivated, amazed, in awe. I hadn&#8217;t watched the movie, so I didn&#8217;t know what to expect, nor had I read any reviews of the book. It was just something I picked up on the shelf at my local Waldenbooks&#8211;and completely out of my reading genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I should say my &#8220;reading age,&#8221; as well. I was 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, I hadn&#8217;t read anything else by Morrell. I bounced between horror and fantasy, science fiction and science fact. So when I was last at the library, perusing the aisles, I picked up <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/43eSTY8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creepers<\/a><\/em>. Morrell fascinated me as a kid. Could he do the same 27 years later, especially as this novel won the Horror Writers Association Stoker Award?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between static characters I&#8217;d met somewhere before, a setting I&#8217;d visited a few hundred times, themes of greed and time I know I&#8217;d read before, <em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/43eSTY8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creepers<\/a><\/em><\/em> was, in a word, disappointing. I&#8217;ve marked it 3 stars simply because it was&#8211;in a <em>Scooby Doo<\/em> sort of way&#8211;entertaining, and I really like being entertained. (In fact, I swear at least two characters would have fit perfectly into a <em>Scooby Doo<\/em> episode, and don&#8217;t think I didn&#8217;t imagine the big dog stumbling to the rescue in at least one not-so-tense scene.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will likely try other Morrell novels to see if this was just an anomaly.
