For a small kid it was a universe full of waves and seaweed and tadpoles and rowboats\u2014where all things that mattered existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both his parental grandparents were carpenters, and he inherited the gene. He&#8217;s always been intrigued by wood and construction. He has built and remodeled houses but especially enjoys fine woodworking\u2014turning a piece of raw wood into a thing of polished purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, he parlayed his building experiences into journalism. He&#8217;s been an editor on several national magazines, and he&#8217;s authored many books and articles on home improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now he writes about the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe West\u201d as an entity (or a myth) is hard to describe.
