What is this? In 2023, I plan to read at least 12 books by Indie authors and post reviews on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Goodreads<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.librarything.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LibraryThing<\/a>, Amazon.com, and this <a href=\"https:\/\/bxwretlind.com\/blog\/reviews\/\">blog<\/a>. These books will also be promoted through my <a href=\"https:\/\/bxwretlind.com\/blog\/newsletter-archive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Semi-Not-Horribly-Regular Newsletter<\/a> and via social media (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bxwretlind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter<\/a> and maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bxwretlind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a> if I can ever figure it out). In addition, I try to interview a few of the authors and post them along with their review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-21c8fe9b-3360-44f5-9d92-2715de35f246\">If you want to know how it went last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/bxwretlind.com\/blog\/2022-iarp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see the 2022 selections here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"iarpsel\"><strong>An Indie Author Program Review Selection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pearl in the Deep<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have been a fan of caves and mines for the longest time. My first few books were about caves, and later in life, I find myself drawn to more novels about caves. I have been in many as well, always alert to the possibilities that surround me in the dark. So when I was presented with the opportunity to read and review <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0947C2JB4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pearl in the Deep<\/a><\/em> by Katherine L. Parker&#8211;set in cave\/mine&#8211;I jumped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was not disappointed. It starts simple enough&#8211;Lotus Calanthe gets a new job on a planet which has a cavern system beneath her. It&#8217;s not the job she wanted, and she doesn&#8217;t feel welcome. From the start, her curiosity draws the reader into the story immediately, and when Lotus is first brought down into the caves&#8211;mines&#8211;and shown the fuel known as blue pearl, nothing is really as it seems. When two worlds collide&#8211;above and below&#8211;the action takes off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0947C2JB4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pearl in the Deep<\/a><\/em> does not let up on the story despite its length. Delightfully interspersed throughout the book are poems which both foreshadow and dig deeper into the emotions. Parker does an outstanding job with extensive biological world-building. Learning that she had once intended to write this book as a graphic novel, I would have been interested to see artwork within the pages, and if it was my ability to ever influence writers to do such a thing, I would say&#8211;do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This novel is at once mystery, fantasy, science fiction, and thriller. The writing is both crisp and poetic, especially within dream sequences.
